Iridium Certus: Benefit from the Best of Satellite Innovation

IRIDIUM Certus is a service offering based on a constellation of 66 satellites. They are deployed in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) within the L-band frequency range. Developed by IRIDIUM, a satellite communications access provider, these latest-generation satellites orbit the entire Earth. This allows IRIDIUM to be the only operator to provide global coverage for satellite communications. Other networks operate geostationary satellites with regional coverage. Polar regions are exclusively covered by the Iridium network. It is the best alternative to GSM and wired networks for guaranteeing connections in white zones (zones blanches) anywhere in the world.

IRIDIUM Certus services are aimed at customers operating in land, maritime, and aerial environments. They offer unmatched communication quality with low latency, facilitating access to numerous services:

  • Voice (Phony): Up to 3 simultaneous lines;

  • SMS: For sending text messages, up to 160 characters;

  • Short Burst Data (SBD) transmission: For IoT interfaces and geolocation;

  • Medium and High-Speed Data transmissions (VoIP and streaming): From 22 kbps up to 704 kbps for connecting to the Internet and for sending and receiving files in shared mode.

Iridium Certus® is an innovation-focused service, flexible for IoT applications. Its very high-speed capability can reach up to 1.4 Mbps to meet the needs of future connectivity.

Designed by recognized satellite equipment manufacturers such as Thales, Cobham, and Lars Thrane, the robustness and reliability of the terminals have been tested across many fields and in the most extreme weather conditions.

To meet international navigation and safety standards at sea, some marine equipment is GMDSS approved.

The IRIDIUM Certus Service

Mid Band

The Iridium Certus 100 family is aimed at all those seeking an entry-level service for voice communication and Internet connection from 22 kbps up to 88 kbps. This range features a non-guaranteed speed associated with billing based on the volume exchanged, per Megabyte. The terminals in this range are built on the 9770 core module and are characterized by:

  • A small footprint modem;

  • Small, reduced-size, low-gain antennas;

  • Limited data transmission speed, ideal for exchanging small files such as GRIB data;

  • Access to two simultaneous voice channels.

For use at sea, the LT-4100 terminal by Lars Thrane offers numerous advantages and diversifies the offering, which until now consisted only of satellite boxes with antennas.

Due to its design and robustness, this equipment is perfectly suited to the constraints of the maritime environment. Yachting enthusiasts, shipowners, and vessel operators will find an appropriate solution here.

Designed for fixed and mobile configurations, it features:

  • 2 simultaneous high-quality voice lines;

  • A firewall and a user authentication system for a high level of security;

  • IP data management (outgoing firewall configuration, port forwarding, etc.);

  • A Web server for configuration and maintenance;

  • Compliance with the Iridium GMDSS service for rescue at sea;

  • An Ethernet LAN Interface on the control unit;

  • Support for external SIP PBXs and SIP handsets (up to 8);

  • High-performance GNSS/GPS receiver;

  • A large 4.3-inch TFT display supporting day and night mode;

  • A single antenna cable (up to 500m);

  • POTS via Analog Telephone Adapters (ATA).

Broadband

On land and at sea, the Iridium Certus 200 and 700 offerings provide higher data speeds in addition to voice communication.

Certus 200 up to 188 Kbit/s

Still very compact, omnidirectional, conical in shape, and without moving parts, the active antenna is very easy to install in an open area, on a mast, or on a roof. Voice communication allows access to 3 lines simultaneously, and the modem integrates all the interfaces for fast Internet connection, notably a built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi router for communication via mobile phone.

Designed by THALES using the 9810 core module, VesseLink 200 terminals are aimed at fleets and vessels of all sizes. The MissionLink 200 addresses fixed land-based use or use when embedded in a vehicle. These are good compromises for having an Internet connection with faster speeds and considering access to professional applications. These terminals are also characterized by:

  • Simplified configuration via web server or API for integration and back-up of other solutions (cellular, VSAT);

  • Compatibility with 4G LTE, and both iOS and Android applications;

  • Optional ‘rackable’ modem.

Certus 700 up to 704 Kbit/s

The land and maritime versions of the MissionLink 700 and VesseLink 700 terminals operate using an antenna with a larger diameter and size. They are still optimized to benefit from the best quality of service: 3 simultaneous lines and an Internet connection for highly professional applications.

The THALES and COBHAM terminals for the maritime versions, and exclusively THALES for the land version, are very quick to deploy and install. To secure your primary communications or act as a backup to other solutions, the Certus 700 offering adapts according to your needs: tariff plans with an included Megabyte volume allocation and a reduced commitment period.

As a satellite service access provider, E-sat provides you with the SIM card associated with the selected package. Communication management is carried out on a dedicated platform, allowing real-time action on the lines. Activations are performed remotely within 2 hours of your request.

For subscriptions, various packages are available. We set up alerts, and you receive a detailed invoice of communications to help you control your consumption budget.

As for the prepaid service, you receive alerts regarding depletion and credit expiration. Lines can be remotely recharged at any time to ensure you always stay connected and reachable.

Iridium Certus Case Study in Nigeria

With a well-established local partner, E-SAT is presenting the IRIDIUM Certus offering to customers and prospects in the maritime sector of the oil industry. Oil constitutes Nigeria’s main resource, and oil players are numerous, ranging from Majors to subcontractors, all primarily operating offshore while being based in Lagos and especially Port Harcourt and Warri. The needs are extensive for securing communications on installations, for expatriates, for transporting personnel between different sites, for supply vessels, and also for having solutions available at the start of a project or as a backup during crises.

Iridium Certus – Mission Link 700 installed on a vehicle in Nigeria

The Iridium Certus offering proves ideal, both on land and at sea, for fulfilling these missions: The terminals, particularly those in the THALES MissionLink and VesseLink range, are easy to deploy for voice communication and Internet connectivity. The lack of required pointing (l’absence de pointage) reassures users, as does the simplicity of configuration. The solution is being developed in all contexts, notably for our demonstration in fixed installations or aboard a vehicle while awaiting deployment on a vessel… The tariff offers, featuring a minimum commitment period and reduced costs compared to competing networks, coupled with online communication monitoring, reassure operators. These are all assets that contribute to the integration of IRIDIUM Certus into the portfolio of existing and future telecom solutions.
